Circle Target Jump

Odd or Even

You will need: cones

  • With your cones create 3 lines – one in the middle (which students begin at), one on the left (the odd line) and one on the right (the even line)
  • Begin by calling out a number - If the number is odd, then students run to the odd line. If even, students run to the even line.
  • After each run, students line up in a single line along the middle line once more and wait for the next call.
  • Increase the difficulty by calling out maths problems e.g. 3x8 = ? or 44 divided by 4 = ?
  • Once more, if the answer is odd, then students run to the odd line. If even students run to the even line.

Running Long Jump Experiment

You will need: cones, beanbags, jumping discovery questions (printable), Running Long Jump Skill Card (printable)

  • Line students up alongside each other with jumping space in front of them.
  • Using the jumping discovery questions (printable), experiment with students around different sprinting techniques.
  • Share the key information on the Running Long Jump Skill Card - Head, arms, legs & feet
  • For the second part of the activity, pair students up with a cone or spot marker (to create jumping line), beanbag (to mark landing point) and Running Long Jump Skill Card.
  • Working in pairs - One is the jumper, whilst the other monitors the jumping line and landing position
  • After 5 jumps each, partners will switch roles.

Circle Target Jump

You will need: cones, hula hoops

  • Divide students up into groups of 3 - a jumper, a take off line referee and a landing referee.
  • Place a hula hoop directly in front of a starting cone for each group. Ensure there is adequate running space behind the take-off line for jumpers to build up jumping speed.
  • The jumper has one attempt to jump inside the circle - both feet must land inside or on the edge of the circle.
  • After each successful jump, the student refereeing the hula hoop, flips the hoop back one hula hoop space to increase the difficulty.
  • Keep repeating until the jumper can no longer land in the hoop.
  • Rotate positions so each student has a go at being the jumper.

The Maze

You will need: cones and bibs.

  • Set up a 4 X 4 grid with cones
  • Assign pupils a bib with 4 different colours
  • Pupils spread out randomly on all four sides of the grid
  • Call out a colour and a way of traveling
  • Pupils with that colour bib travel down their channel to the other end
  • If they meet another player, they shake hands and continue
  • Repeat with another colour(s) and/or way of traveling
